I received a job on a 2017 BMW M240 that had ingested large amounts of water that the pistons just simply could not compress.
It took about a week to get an approval to replace the engine, then the real fun began.
I will never understand why a car company would make it so very difficult to get a vehicle out of park when repairs are needed. This car has a full under cover that does not allow access to the the park lever and it had to be put on dollies to get it in the shop.
Once I got it inside, I had to overcome the locked up engine to be able to remove the torque converter bolts. Ultimately the oil pan had to be removed to get the last two bolts. After that it was fairly easy to remove the engine.
I did have some challenges with clearance on some bolts, but I got it all out. The other difficult part was the wiring harness, it just goes everywhere. All black (just like the hoses), in multiple looms, and all of the connections have secondary locks. I realize that most manufacturers use exclusively black plastic looms, or flock tape. But, when there are so many jumbled together that it looks like spaghetti, that makes it a real issue to efficiently do a job.
I did get the engine out, broken down and new one back in on the same day. I am pretty happy with that, especially since it was my fist B58 engine.
Now the new engine is in, it’s a used motor, so I have to verify everything about it. So on the first drive, it idles great, runs poorly under load. Now I have more diagnoses to do.
